The aim of the project was to build capacity in the German development community about the new EU-Strategy for Africa’s development that was signed by the European Commission in December 2005.
CulturCooperation organized 12 Seminars about all main issues of the EU Africa policy: The EU-Africa Strategy, the EU policy to achieve the MDGs, economic and trade relations between the EU and Africa, EU Africa policy between migration and development. Introductions were given by German and international experts. Other contributions came from development stakeholders, working in different African countries. The introductions and papers presented by the experts were received with great interest. Central to the ensuing discussion was the question, whether the new common EU strategy is adequate for making EU policies relating to Africa more coherent, which would be a central precondition to helping Africa to achieve the MDGs. Most participants agreed that there is a growing awareness in EU member states of the need to formulate a consistent European strategy to address Africa’s crises (poverty, lack of access to basic education and health services, weakness in governance), but, on the other hand, member states are very reluctant to give up their trading privileges.
The seminars gave new impetus to all stakeholders in a wider discussion on the future of European relations with Africa especially in the context of the current MDG campaign.
In 2007, under the heading „Culture Counts“, CulturCooperation organized a set of meetings with European stakeholders from NSAs and local authorities. Aiming at raising awareness of the economic und social importance of integrating culture as an important sector-crossing factor in development strategies, the programme highlighted the role of culture for sustainable development by presenting current projects taking place in different ACP countries. Contributions were made by Dutch NSAs about their museum-development projects in Surinam and Indonesia, Austrian NSAs presented a project in Uganda, where theatre is successfully used as a tool in HIV-campaigns, and a German development service highlighted the role of craftworks for poverty reduction by presenting a workshop programme with San-women in Namibia and Botswana, where the traditional skills in bead work were used to create new collections of eggshell jewellery.
The workshops were successful in building up new network structures between different European development stakeholders. These contacts between European stakeholders will lead to the stronger integration of culture-programmes in more European countries.
A three day congress titled “Students build bridges” took place in Hamburg in May 2002. The motto of this conference initiated by students from the former Yugoslavia, was the search for reconciliation and mutual reconstruction beyond the existing ethnic and political borders. The congress was aimed at students from Southeastern Europe, who were studying in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Individual students who came directly from the former Yugoslavian provinces also participated.
CulturCooperation organized a cultural program titled “ BALKAN – treading on unfamiliar ground…” that accompanied the congress. The contributions took up the diversity of the congress themes and aimed to make them perceptible with artistic means. “BALKAN – on unfamiliar ground…” Exhibition program in the foyer of HanseMerkur.
In the year 2000, as part of the project „Nachhaltiger Umgang mit Wasser als Überlebensfrage“ (dealing with water on a long-term basis as a means of survival) organised by the Eine Welt Netzwerk and CulturCooperation in Hamburg, a series of workshop discussions took place.
Parallel to the special significance that films were being given after the victory of the revolution in Cuba, a new form of film posters was created: posters that were not only used for publicity purposes, but were also works of art. The Cuban film institute, ICAIC, employed a number of artists whose designs were produced in a costly screen-printing method.
One of the most well-known poster painters to have worked for the ICAIC was Eduardo Muñoz Bachs who designed the first poster for the film “Historias de la Revolución“ by Tomás Gutiérrez in 1960.
CulturCooperation has a small collection of original screen-print posters designed by a range of artists. This collection has previously been shown in co-operation with the Hamburg Filmbüro on the occasion of a Cuban film series.
